What is a tracheostomy?

A tracheostomy is a small surgical incision in the throat through which a tube is inserted into the windpipe to relieve airway obstruction or assist airway clearance in children too weak to cough. It is also necessary in children who require long-term ventilation for any reason, most commonly due to congenital muscle weakness disorders.
